WILLIAM2 (William1 and
Helen [Stevenson]), called "Little Will," b. Balfron, Scotland, Aug.
14, 1767. Came to America with his brother Thomas in 1790. They began clearing
land bought for them by their uncle Stevenson, on which Walter Gilfillan, son of
Robert, afterward lived, now called the Gates farm. Then he and his brother
Thomas lived together on the farm where Alexander McLaren lived in 1860. After
marriage he lived on his own farm, where John McMillan lived in 1860. Mason. He
m. 1st, Nov. 28, 1788, Janet, dau. John Waddell (b. .July 19, 1768; d. July 24,
1812); 2nd, March, 1815, by Rev. Jas. Milligan, Ruth, widow of Joseph Chamberlin
of Peacham, dau. Capt. Abel Blanchard (b. ____; d. Nov. 11, 1862). He d. Aug.
14, 1840. These were all members of the Center Ch. and are buried there. |

William Gilfillan and
his brother Thomas came on foot from Boston to Barnet. While on their way they
stopped at the house of Abiel Blanchard in Concord, N.H. A quantity of apples
was set before them, William saving the seeds, with which his orchard was
planted. The child, Ruth Blanchard, then an infant, became his 2nd wife. He was
known as "Little Will," to distinguish him from another Wm. Gilfillan,
who was not related to this family.

Sept. 10, 1802. Lived In Boston some years. Returned to Barnet, 1833. Learned
the cooper's trade. Farmer where David Gates lives. This is one of the highest
farms in Barnet. Dr. McNab once told him that he would never get as near heaven
again as he was there. Mr. Gilfillan replied that it was something to have lived
as near heaven as long as he had. He m. 1st, Hannah T., dau. Daniel Kent of
Newbury. Mass. (b. July 28, 1806; d. Sept. 5. 1844); 2nd, Susan, dau. James
Henderson (b. Newbury, July 27, 1808; d. .July 13, 1903). He rem. to West
Barnet, 1873, having sold his farm to his son, Abel B. Elder in Ref. Pres. Ch.
Buried at Barnet Center. Children all b. in old house, present house built ab.

(William2,William1), b. Barnet, Dec. 17,
1825. Graduated Vt. University, 1847, with high honors. Teacher. He m. Aug. 1,
1850. Helen A. Partridge of Peacham. Teachers at Xenia, Oh., 1850-53; La Crosse,
Wis.. 185354; Winona, Minn., 1854-58; Trempealeau, Wis., 1858-76, where he was
also superintendent of schools. He also engaged in real estate business. Mr.
Gilfillan was one of the early abolitionists of the Garrison school, an earnest
advocate of temperance, and a leader in the cause of prohibition. He, and most
of his family were faithful members of the Congregational Church. He d. after a
long illness, Oct. 26, 1885, and his wife three days later.

Dorothy Bean Phillips), b. Barre, Vt., Nov. 10, 1832. Dr. Scott was, till 16
years old, on his father's farm in Greensboro. Attended academy and taught
school. Studied medicine with Drs. Darling and Houghton of Lyndon, also at
Pittsfield, Mass., and Woodstock, Vt. Graduated, 1854, Hahneman Homeopathic
Medical College of Philadelphia. Demonstrator of Anatomy in same, 1864-66. In
practice at Lawrence, Mass., 30 years. Master mason and member of several
medical societies. Both d. and are buried at Lawrence, Mass., Bellevue Cemetery.
She d. Aug. 7, 1911.

N. H.). He fitted for college at McIndoes and St. Johnsbury Academies; graduated
Dartmouth College, 1889. Went to Montana same year and became editor of the
Great Falls Evening Leader. Became business manager in Aug., 1894, of the Great Falls Daily Tribune. In Jan., 1895, he associated
with W. M. Bole (son of Rev. John Bole of West Barnet) and they purchased the
Tribune, of which he has since been manager.
