My Great Grandfather's name was Robert Blair he was married to Lavina Walls. . . I'm not sure what year but they had 13 children including my grandmother Elizabeth Blair. They were married in the US I know that much. Apparently Lavina Walls was Catholic and Robert Blair was protestant, their familys did not approve of their relationship and apparently sold lavina as an indentured servent in the US. Robert eventually followed her and they were married.

The B.B.C. in Britain is showing a series of T.V. programmes about tracing family ancestry. I had already been tracing my mother's mothers family but thought i would try and find out more about about her father's ancestry. He was Petty Officer George Wright Blair who I believe originated from Dunbarton, Scotland. I believe his father may have been butchers and another family name was Black. My grandfather served on H.M.S. Monmouth in the First World war and was drowned when the ship was sunk by the SMS Nurnberg off the coast of Chile in 1914. At he time my mother,Margaret was only six but I know that her mother Mabel took her on a visit to Scotland to meet her relatives as I have a photograph from that visit. Mbel and George were married in 1908. Subsequently my grandmother lost touch with the Blair family as she married again when my mother was in her twenties. My grandmother, mother and myself are all Plymouthians, Devon by birth but I repeated history by marrying another scottish sailor in 1967. I note that William Maurice Blair of Old Kirkpatrick mentions that his fanily were meat traders could we be from the same branch?

I am researching 3 surnames (Cayer, Pelland, Lindsay) While working on Lindsay I was put in contact with David Kingsley and he gave me much research on Lindsay. There are numerous BLAIRS in Scotland. See the last e-mail reference from James Blair in Perth Scotland. Sid Blair, grandfather of James Blair, Calgary, was the pioneer who brought the Alberta Oil Sands to present day production and he has never been recognised for it. Take care. I have a picture that appears to have been taken in the late 1800's or early 1900's. I appears to have been taken in a tropical location on a beach. There are several caucasions both male and female and several natives with spears and bows. There is also a large cannon laying on the beach. Greetings. Have any of you ever heard that the name Blair is the Scottish (Celtic) word for "battlefield?" I believe its original meaning was that of just "field." I have an intuition that Blair may once have been Bel Air, referring to the beautiful air one might find in a rural field. Unfortunately, these open spaces were often used for "rumbles" of the axe-wielding variety. Hence, the first "William de Blair" would translate to "William of the Battlefield."

Hi there, I was hoping to find something about my present families past history. There is massive amount of Gilfillan's that live in Bo'ness, West Lothian, my father grew up there. Hi all you fellow Blairs out there! I am desperately seeking family members in the U.K. I am a descendant of the Rev Samuel Blair who was my Great Great Grandfather. His son Rev Robert Hugh BLair married Margaret WAlker in 1861. In 1872 he was Rector of St Martins church in Worcestershire. For some years he was also headmaster of Worcester College for the blind. I have in my posession a scrapbpk belonging to his late wife , my Great Great Grandmother, which contains newspaper cuttings and also some of the sermons which he preached at St Martins. One of his sons was Alfred who emigrated to Suoth Africa after sturying at CAmbridge University and took up the post of Headmaster of Cape Town High School in 1920.
